Back in 1966, production started on a vehicle that would become a staple of American performance engineering in muscle cars. That year, the General Motors Company announced the awaited release of the Ford Mustang-killer they had been working on - the Chevrolet Camaro.
The Camaro SS specs have included V6 and V8 options from this trim's conception. And so, for the next 35 years, generations 1-5 of the Camaro would commonly be seen driven by the everyday driver as it was meant to be. The muscle car's performance models would also become commonplace on the track, on the drag strip and even on many movie sets.
The tradition continues today with the sixth generation Chevy Camaro Super Sport (SS).
Here's a guide to the 2019 Camaro SS' specs and how it carries the tradition of a performance American muscle car.
Before we get to the stuff we know you really want to hear about, i.e., performance, let's talk about some of the other Camaro SS specs.
For those considering buying a new Chevy Camaro SS, fuel economy is likely not at the top of their priority list. Still, the 2019 Camaro SS offers pretty reasonable fuel economy, even as a daily driver.
With its rating of 16 miles per gallon city and 24 miles per gallon highway, the 2019 Camaro SS' 19-gallon fuel tank lets you drive up to 456 miles on a single tank of gas. This is right in line with its long-enduring competitor, the Ford Mustang. The 2019 Mustang V8 models offer a similar fuel economy range of 15 miles per gallon city and 24/25 miles per gallon highway.
On the list of priorities when it comes to getting a Camaro, cargo room probably falls somewhere right around fuel economy.
The 2019 Camaro SS coupe offers 9.1 cubic feet/257 cubic liters of cargo room. The convertible model offers a bit less at 7.3 cubic feet/206 cubic liters.
One probably won't be taking too many trips to the hardware store with their Camaro. Still, there's no reason a trip to the grocery store can't be fun. It never hurts to be the cool parent either when taking one's (small) children to school in the Camaro SS. For this, the 2019 Camaro SS can seat four.
Of course, an important factor of any vehicle is its weight. This is going to affect its fuel economy, power and handling.
Chevrolet managed to strip 200 pounds from the 2019 Camaro SS' predecessor. This model year Camaro's weight will fluctuate a bit depending on whether you're looking at convertible or coupe options and manual or automatic transmissions.
Their respective curb weights are as follows:
3685 lb./1671 kg. for the manual coupe option
3697 lb./1697 kg. for the automatic coupe option
3932 lb./1783 for the manual convertible option
3943 lb./1788 kg. for the automatic convertible option
No matter how powerful the powertrain of a performance vehicle is, it won't matter if it can't stay glued to the road with an appropriate set of performance wheels.
This was no secret to the General Motors Company in their production of the new Chevy Camaro SS. Neither was the fact that a vehicle which, from the start, was meant to turn heads should have wheels that look like the engine sounds.
On all 2019 Camaro SS trims, 20-inch aluminum alloy wheels are standard. In the base Camaro SS model, the rear drive wheels are 9.5 inches wide with the front wheels being 8.5 inches wide.
In the upgraded track package version of the Camaro SS, the 1LE, you get even more of a performance upgrade with your tires. This trim's wheels are 11 inches in the rear and 10 inches in the front.
The tires that come stock on the base SS Camaro are Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 summer-only run-flats. The 1LE track package comes with a performance tire upgrade too, as this comes stock with Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar summer-only tires.
Not only are the wheels themselves extremely important when it comes to performance and handling, but so is their layout–the vehicle's wheelbase and track.
The 2019 Chevy Camaro SS' wheelbase, or distance between the centers of the front and rear wheels, is 110.7 inches, or 2811 millimeters.
Its track length, or distance between the centers of two tires on the same axle, is 63 inches/1600 millimeters for the front and 62.9 inches/1598 millimeters for the rear.
Now we're really getting into the fun stuff, rising towards the top of that priority list we were talking about earlier.
One of the most important considerations of a performance vehicle is how it actually handles the power generated under the hood. Can it stay glued to the road even when cranking around a hairpin turn? Will its rear end kick out into an oversteer fishtail because of its tires being unable to handle a sharp acceleration?
On the other end of the handling spectrum is performance braking with sharp deceleration. This is a factor especially important if one is planning on upgrading their Camaro SS with the 1LE track package and bringing it to the track to live up to its name.
How are the 2019 Camaro SS' specs when it comes to these considerations?
Brembo is a name that has long since been a staple of performance car braking systems. In fact, the Italian manufacturer's systems come standard on every Ferrari, from the street to the track.
The 2019 Chevy Camaro SS also comes with its own set of Brembo disc brakes. This gives it the ability to stop from 60 miles per hour to 0 in 117 feet. To keep the brake system cool and performing optimally, the SS has cooling ducts which channel air to the brakes, reducing brake temperature and fade.
Another recent technological innovation included in the 2019 Camaro SS related to improving its on-road handling is the incorporation of torque vectoring to its wheels.
This is an advanced braking system which limits oversteer and increases in-turn agility. It does so by controlling braking to each wheel individually, which allows braking of the inner wheels when in a turn, increasing pivoting ability.
A performance suspension feature added with the 1LE track package upgrade is GM's Magnetic Ride Control technology. This vehicle handling innovation allows the vehicle's computer to independently control each corner of the car. When detecting body roll, the Camaro's ECU can adjust the stiffness of the vehicle's dampers to limit shock and keep the vehicle's center of gravity lower to the ground.
Better shock absorption and weight distribution mean more overall traction for better handling and greater ride comfort.
If you're reading this considering purchasing a 2019 Chevy Camaro SS, or already have bought one, are we at the top of your priority list now?
You only have to go as far as what the "SS" acronym actually stands for to get an idea of what likely is at the top of the list of priorities for the prospective buyer of one.
Yes, the Chevrolet Camaro Super Sport has long been a staple of an affordable performance sports car from the General Motors Company.
The sixth generation, 2019 SS is powered by a 6.2L LT1 V8 engine which cranks out 455 horsepower and 455 foot-pounds of torque. The 6.2L V8 LT4 motor in the 1LE track package upgrade is further juiced up to be able to produce 650 horsepower.
Even if one doesn't spend up on the 1LE track package, it doesn't mean they can't get an on-the-track experience. The standard SS comes with the ability to select "Track Mode" when driving their Camaro, which adjust the calibration of its suspension system, steering control, shift feel and even exhaust sound.
If one still doesn't feel like a professional driver while testing the SS' 455 hp engine while in track mode, its active rev matching technology is likely to do the trick. This system anticipates impending downshifts and adjusts the throttle to match wheel speed, making for incredibly smooth manual shifting. Active rev matching is a feature which also reduces transmission shock when shifting.
