For over 50 years Chevrolet has had one goal for Camaro, beat Mustang. It's one of the auto industry's most intense rivalries. So what will you do when you're faced with a head to head competition with a Mustang out on the road?
Are you going to let the Camaro legacy down by not performing to the best of your car's abilities? Of course not! So put your best wheel forward by doing a few Camaro mods to your car so that you're ready for a challenge on the road (or the track).
Let’s start with a mod that won't improve the performance but will give you a complete custom look—vinyl. A vinyl wrap is faster and more affordable than getting a well-done custom paint job.
Even better, with vinyl, you aren't constrained by the limits of paint. So if you want your car to have a gold mirror finish, you can. If you aren't ready to commit to a full vehicle wrap, you could go for some sporty racing stripes. Or you could design something custom that only you will have.
The best part is when you grow tired of your wrap you can simply peel it off and try something new! Just be sure you go with a knowledgeable and skilled professional to apply your wrap, so it comes out looking great.
Replacing your stock wheels and tires is partially about looks and partially about performance.
Your first option is to choose wheels that are the same size as the stock wheels, just different in color and/or design. This will give you the same performance, just a new look. To enhance performance on these rims, buy a higher quality tire that is designed for the type of driving you intend to do.
You can change the performance and ride of your car by changing the sizing of your wheels. (But, keep in mind that bigger is not necessarily better.) The bigger your rim, the smaller the sidewall of your tire. The smaller the sidewall, the harsher the ride.
You also need to keep in mind the amount of space in the wheel well in addition to considering how the car will handle through turns with extra width. (This will affect the camber which in turn changes the handling of your Camaro.)
Who says you have to stick with the stock interior?
You can have your seats upholstered with memory foam to make them the most comfortable seats you've ever sat in. Or have them done in a custom leather with colorful accent stitching (which would be one heck of a finishing touch on a custom-painted or wrapped Camaro).
This mod will change the profile of the front of your Camaro and offer up less wind resistance.
The differences are subtle, so look closely to spot the characteristics of a performance splitter.
First, you will want to improve "downdraft," which will boost your Camaro's handling.
Then you’ll want to find a front splitter that improves aerodynamics, which will ultimately improve the way air flow is channeled around your car.
Finally, you want a front splitter that reduces your car's weight (a carbon fiber splitter will do the trick). By making your car lighter, you improve your car's power to weight ratio.
There are three things you need to think about when you modify your exhaust. First, you want to increase pure raw power. Second, create a deep sexy growl that shows your Camaro means business. Third, give the tail end of your car a stylish and aggressive look.
Once you start paying attention to aftermarket options, you'll never be happy going back to the stock sound. Go for what sounds best to you! After all, you are the one who is going to hear it the most. If you need help though, we suggest an exhaust with deep, full-bodied audio.
For performance, you want your new exhaust to work well with your catalytic converter. The idea is to increase the outward airflow but not too much, because you need to keep a certain amount of back pressure on the engine.
A spoiler is a signature part of the Camaro look. Today's spoilers can give your car a retro feel and add the benefits of modern performance metrics.
Most of them are easy to install as they are bolt on. If you want a seamless custom look for a front splitter and spoiler combo. This way the front and rear of the car match.
For some owners, the Camaro grill is a lackluster part of the car. Don't leave yourself wanting! Replace that thing with an aftermarket option!
An aftermarket grill can match the color of your car for a seamless look. Or, if weight reduction is your goal, you can opt for carbon fiber.
One of the easiest ways to increase the performance of your Camaro engine is to replace the stock air intake filter with a cold air intake. Choose one that actually draws in cooler air from outside of the engine bay.
Otherwise, this mod is pointless.
When you perform this mod, your engine receives colder, more dense air into the combustion chamber of the engine. The more air you add, the more fuel you can add to the engine, and the more of these two ingredients means a larger reaction.
The larger reaction creates more energy to power the crankshaft. Congratulations, you now have more horsepower.
Your ECM is the computer brain that controls almost every function of your Camaro. Off the production line, its software has certain parameters programmed in that comply with federal safety and emissions regulations.
Compliance with these regulations can often mean that some of the performance of the vehicle is sacrificed. As a result, there are many companies out there that offer engine tuning or ECM reprogramming. You can buy a kit that plugs into your Camaro and do the reprogramming right at home.
This is another part of vehicles that must comply with safety and emissions but does you no favors with performance. Your catalytic convertor in the component between the engine and muffler in the exhaust system.
This filter cleans the dirty air that comes from the engine before it gets released into the atmosphere. This is a great thing as it means the exhaust coming from your Camaro isn't full of harmful gases. But, the problem is that this filter restricts the outflow of air from the engine.
When the engine is restricted in the amount of work it can do, it can only expel air at a certain rate.
Replace your catalytic converter with a high flow one. This increases the rate of airflow which in turn means your engine can perform better.
One thing General Motors hasn't done well over the years is to create a sturdy chassis setup. (That is unless you own a Corvette.)
So how do you get that sturdiness in your Gen 5 Camaro? You need a strut brace to address the weak points that the independent front and rear suspension have created.
This will firm up the support for the front shock towers. When you go around tight turns or corner at high speeds, the extra support will allow for a tighter response.
While you're at it, also look into a chassis brace. This will reinforce the subframe of your Camaro. While the strut frame goes under the hood, the subframe goes on under the car.
Once you address both of those things, all of the weak points will have the support they need to perform the way Chevy intended. You'll carve corners and dig into the drag strip in no time.
A supercharger is going to produce power for the engine by using the crankshaft. This means that it connects directly to the engine through a belt. If you want a boost of power at low RPMs, then a supercharger can help you.
A turbocharger is very similar to a supercharger except that it depends on the engine's exhaust flow to power the turbine. It is also not directly connected to your engine.
If you want your boost to come at high engine speeds, then a turbocharger is your mod.
We've discussed increasing the power and performance of your Camaro, but what happens when you are ready to stop? You need brakes that are powerful enough to give you a controlled stop!
The boost in performance you give your Camaro will cause you to experience brake fade. The increased stress wears out your brakes faster causing them to become less effective quicker.
Look for high-performance rotors, pads, and caliper covers. For most of us, slotted or smooth rotors and performance pads are enough. If you plan to do track time though, look for racing pads. Just know that these pads have some serious bite so they will wear out rotors fast if you use them for your daily driving.
Whatever your modding goals are, there is something on this list to help you accomplish them.
If looks are important, then look for mods that may not improve performance but will change the profile of your car.
If performance is important to you, then look for Camaro mods that will reduce weight, add horsepower, or create stability.
