With 50,963 Camaros sold last year, it's safe to say that this American muscle car is here to stay. One of the biggest American traditions to go along with this is working on and modding cars.
Camaro owners have plenty of options when it comes to aftermarket modifications and parts. The biggest struggle though is to figure out what is worth doing.
Don't waste your time with Camaro modifications that won't give you the performance and looks results you are looking for. Instead, focus on these mods below. They are worth your time.
So without further delay, let's mod your Camaro.
This is one mod that almost anyone can do. You'll replace the stock air intake with a cold air intake. This moves the intake away from the engine.
That way the engine gets cooler air from outside of the engine bay. Cooler air is denser, so its oxygen content is higher.
The higher concentration of oxygen means you can get bigger combustion in the chamber in the engine. The bigger the combustion, the more energy and power are produced.
While you shop for air intakes, pay attention to the filters. You should upgrade your stock filter to a washable one.
With the stock filter, you will eventually need to throw it away and buy a new one. It also won't filter the air as well and will restrict flow.
Aftermarket filters clean the air better and allow for higher air flow through the filter. This restricts the engine less. Best of all, hose it down when it gets dirty and throw it back in your Camaro.
Everyone talks about superchargers, but most people don't really know what they do. Superchargers boost your engine power production by up to 50%.
It does this by attaching to the front of the engine mechanically by way of a belt or pulley. It connects to the camshaft.
When your engine runs, the supercharger forces more air into the chamber. The more air, the more oxygen, and the more fuel you can add.
What you end up with is bigger combustion and higher production of power.
A turbocharger also forces more air into the engine to increase power. The difference is that a turbine powered by the exhaust fumes does the action.
Turbos are considered cleaner, but they also have a delayed effect.
You can choose to install one or both of these chargers. If you decide to install both, you can refer to your Camaro as a twin turbo.
One of the easiest ways to change the whole look of your Camaro is to put custom wheels on it. A popular choice is to choose chrome, but black rims are quickly growing in popularity.
If you want the least amount of effort required, choose wheels that are the same size as the stock wheels. You could also go bigger or smaller; people rarely go smaller though.
If you do want bigger rims, keep in mind that at a certain point you will have to make other adjustments. Oversized wheels run the risk of rubbing on the wheel wells. They also throw your speedometer and RPMs off.
There's no denying that the Camaro headlights and taillights look great. But they may not fit your personal style. Or they may not be as bright as you'd like them to be.
You can replace the entire headlight and taillight housing units. Doing this gives you the option of changing the look of your Camaro.
You could choose headlights that have LED or EL accenting. This will make your Camaro stand out with a custom look.
If you don't want to change the whole housing, you can change just the bulbs. You have the option of choosing between halogen, LED and HID bulbs.
Halogen bulbs are the traditional headlight bulbs that come stock in cars. They tend to give off a yellow tinted light and aren't as bright as other options on the market.
HID
HID bulbs are known for being super bright headlights. They require a bit more work since you need to install ballasts with your lights.
These lights come in a range of temperatures. On the warmer end of the spectrum, the light is very yellow. On the cold end of the spectrum, you have a light that is blue or purple tinted.
The middle of the HID light spectrum will give you bright white light. This is what most people aim to achieve with their headlights.
LED
Your third option is LED headlights. While some owners love them, many people find them to not be bright enough. While LEDs are bright, they do not project the same way as HIDs.
So far, we've talked about making your engine produce more power. This is all well and good, but you'll still have limited power if you don't improve the exhaust system.
You need to improve the outflow of exhaust to free up the back pressure on the engine. This frees up the engine to continue producing more power.
Start by replacing your headers. These are the pipes that come off the engine and connect to the catalytic converter.
For better flow, replace the stock headers with ones that make all of the pipes the same length. Then the flow from each is even. This evens out and increases the outflow.
Next, replace the stock catalytic converter with a higher flow one. Your converter cleans the exhausts gases.
While cleaning is necessary, it also slows down the exhaust flow. So replacing the converter allows you to stay compliant with environmental regulations while gaining your power back.
The last step is to replace the muffler. This is the part of the exhaust you see sticking out of the back of cars.
With both the muffler and other exhaust pipes, you want to find tubes that are a bigger diameter. You want to go bigger, but not too big. This will optimize the airflow while maintaining the right amount of back pressure on the engine.
When you pick your muffler, listen to the sounds they make. This is your choice to give your Camaro that deep sexy growl we all love in muscle cars.
The ECU is the computer brain that controls everything that relates to the running of your Camaro. Off the production line, the ECU is programmed to have your car run in compliance with emissions standards. Chevy also aims to give you decent gas efficiency.
Both of these things are not conducive for getting the maximum performance out of your Camaro though. The answer is to use a tuner or programmer to adjust the settings in the ECU's code.
Keep in mind that these tuners come in a wide range of prices. Some are quality, while others are not. Do your research to ensure you invest in a high-quality kit.
Some options will adjust the programming already in place on your ECU. Other options remove the factory script and replace it with an entirely new program.
Before you start messing with your Camaro's ECU make sure you understand how your engine system work. You can hinder your car's performance or even damage it inadvertently.
When you make these mods and seriously increase the power of your Camaro, you need to improve upon your brakes, too. All that power requires bigger and better brakes for increased stopping power.
You will need to look for performance brakes that can handle higher temperatures. Many Camaro owners are fond of cross-drilled or slotted rotors. These styles increase airflow, which helps heat move away from the rotor.
You can upgrade your brake pads to performance pads. Practice some restraint when upgrading your brakes. You can end up spending way more than necessary trying to buy higher performance brakes than what you need.
While you're at it, add some color to your wheels with matching caliper covers. That is the flash of red or yellow you see behind the wheels on sports cars.
Don't get us wrong; the interior of the Camaro is well done. For some of us though, we want a bit more punch of color.
You can purchase individual pieces or an entire trim kit for your dashboard. The trim pieces often include accents for door sills, dashboard, gauge cluster, and center console.
For the best look, match the trim color to the exterior paint color.
For those looking to boost the power and performance of their Camaro, engine and exhaust upgrades are the way to go. These Camaro modifications include cold air intake, supercharger, turbocharger, and new headers.
For mods that improve upon the look for your Camaro, focus on mods such as the interior trim kit, wheels, and exterior lights.
Whatever mods you decide to do, think about your car as a whole. You want all of your mods to work together for overall improvement.
